LORD LUGARD'S HANDOVER NOTE

From The Wall of Ayo Ojeniyi

LUGARD ON NIGERIAN TRIBES

*The handover notes Lord Lugard wrote to his colleague, Walter H. Lang, on the 25th of September 1918. The quote reads inter alia:*

HAUSA:
The Hausa-Fulani has no ideals, no ambitions save such as sensual in character. He is a fatalist, spendthrift and a gambler. He is so gravely immoral and seriously diseased that he is a menace to any community to which he seeks to attach himself.

YORUBA:
Lagos has for 20 years opposed every Governor and has formented strife and bloodshed in the hinterland…,  I have spent the best part of my life in Africa; my aim has been the betterment of the natives for whom I have been ready to give my life. But after some 29 years, and after nearly 12 years as Governor here, I am free to say that the people of Lagos and indeed the westerners are the lowest, the most seditious and disloyal, the most purely prompted by self-seeking money motives of any people I have met.

IGBO:
These people of predominantly Eastern Nigeria are fiercely rebellious with no regard for authority. Though industrious and religious, in deference to the objectives of her majesty and the crown,  they are highly dangerous to be trusted with power.

HOW SAFE ARE YOU WITH YOUR DOMESTIC STAFF?

#Copied

HOW SAFE ARE YOU WITH  YOUR PERSONAL STAFF?

How safe are you with that nanny, maid, steward, cook, security guards, driver, lesson teacher, etc, whether at home or in the office?

We are all shouting  "Security! Security!! Security"!!! but are we not all guilty?

1) All the above mentioned people working with us, do we have their guarantors?

Do you ever visit their referees even after a year or two of their engagement?

2) Do we ever revisit their home address provided or call to see if there has been a change in address or phone numbers?

3) Did you register the maid, drivers, nannies, etc, you keep in your homes with the relevant agencies such as the  Police, Safety Commission or Neighbourhood Vigilante groups?

Do you have their photographs?

4) Do you attend your Estate/Street meetings or are you so reserved that you have no relationship with your neighbors and too busy to attend meetings?

5) Do you have a WhatsApp group for residents only for emergency messages such as when  a neighbour is being attacked or robbed, a fire incident, a neighbour is critically ill and needs urgent  help and other emergencies?

6) Do you know that your cook, nanny, driver, steward, maid, day care center handlers or lesson teacher, etc, could be HIV positive? He/She can have Hepatitis B or even tuberculosis?

What will it cost you to do a medical test for them before you employ them?

It is your life that is in danger if you engage a sick victim without knowing their medical history.

7) That househelp you get yearly from an agent. Have u ever bothered to check where the agent lives or whatever job he does. Do u know the Househelp he gives could be a thief, hired killer or kidnapper.

The housegirls/nannies you allow to sleep in your children's  room could be an agent of the devil. They could be criminals

8) Do you know that your driver could be a wanted person by the police in another state for theft or kidnapping?

Have you done a check on him with the Police and do you have a 5x7 photograph of him?

Never allow your daughters get too familiar with drivers.
Especially when they are below 16. They can be raped by these drivers.
Drivers Must never be allowed to take children to school alone.
There must always be a female adult in the car.

Do you know that your driver could be hypertensive, have Hbp, poor eye sight or he could have an enlarged heart and not fit to drive?

9)  Is your security guard a citizen or a foreigner from  Niger, Chad and Benin Republic? How did/can you confirm that? If he is a foreigner, is he
Registered by the requisite organisation and eligible to work here?

10) Never talk about money transactions or cost of your jewelleries or valuables in the presence of your domestic staff.

11)  Never allow Househelp tidy your room when you are not there. It is a time they search your room to know where valuable things are kept and waiting for the right time to. Operate and run away.

12). Most theft usually have in-house informants. Please note that the longer your domestic staff work with you, the more dangerous they can be.

13) Are u aware that your domestic staff monitor your movement?,  Do you also do same?. It is good to monitor them. Go home or office when they least expect u.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE NUMBER ONE SECURITY TO YOURSELF!!!

If you Find this relevant and useful Pls pass to friends and family members.

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T APPRECIATE WHERE IGBOS ARE COMING FROM

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T APPRECIATE WHERE IGBOS WERE COMING FROM:

By Ena Ofugara from Urhobo.

How Much Respect Do You Show Igbos?

I am not Igbo. I am proud of my Urhobo. However, as a student of history, I wish to show just what these great people came/come against and yet thrive.

Okay, the incessant killings in the North will be glossed over so as to make this article not overly long. The civil war will also not be discussed.

However, post civil war, as I explained in my post MINORITY REPORT: THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED AGAINST YOU, the rich in Nigeria have major roots in the Indigenisation decree of 1972 and 1977. I reminded people how the banks gave people of other tribes, predominantly Hausas and Yorubas loans to buy up companies owned by foreigners. Now imagine the Federal government forced Chevron to sell 51 percent of its shares and that Access Bank will give you loans to buy the shares. How rich will you be in a year? 5 Years? That is how many Yorubas and Hausas got to own UAC, all those Dunlop, Leventis, Cadbury etc.

Now while this was ongoing, Awolowo/Gowon told the Nigerian banks to give TOPS twenty naira to any Igbo man that had money in the bank before the war. That is, if you had 5 naira before the war, you will be given the 5 naira. But if you had one million naira, you get just twenty naira in full fulfilment of the banks duty to give you your money.

Ask yourselves, why would the banks give Igbos only twenty naira? Did the banks collapse? So why pay less than you were given?

So while the banks were giving loans to Hausa and Yorubas to buy Oyibo companies they did not build, Igbos were being cheated out of their rightful moneys.

Now note also that these people lost Houses and business across the land. It is safe to say that as at 1970/71, the richest Igbo had 20 naira that may be the equivalent of maybe one million naira.

Let us look at how Dangote made his money. He Dagote (a great man and pride to Nigeria) had an uncle called Dantata who owned huge chunks of the groundnut pyramids of the 50's and 60's. He gave Dangote a loan and Dangote paid it back in a record time. CLAP, CLAP. Then add that Dangote has had his "brothers" in government, from Shagari, Buhari, IBB, Abacha, Abdulsalami to Yar'Adua. When they now agreed to democracy, he was rich enough to have funded Obasanjo and so government policies, be it monopoly afforded him for rice, sugar flour and of course a large share of subsidy etc ensures he is the wealthiest Nigerian. Note that many had same opportunity but did not use it. We kowtow to Dangote's investment capabilities.

However, for the Igbo man, where will he see an uncle that will loan him money? The richest man in their family has how much as at then? So while Fani Kayode can inherit property of his father and grandfather and great grand father, a Chidi Kalu cannot inherit anything from his grandfather who had business in Kano or even Port Harcourt. Neighbours have made his dad's storey building theirs, and even someone as educated as Ken Saro-Wiwa lived in an Igbo war emigrant house as his. (A sore point of the Niger Delta and Igbo Unity). WAEC building was Ojukwu's dad's building and like that building, thousands and the lands with it....lands worth billions today were taken from Igbos and each and every Igbo had tops 20 naira, destroyed homeland, stolen and destroyed wealth away from the East. Also his brother is never president that will give him oil block or fuel lifting. Of 33, only one Igbo man and because he was in Obasanjo's good graces.

YET LOOK HOW PROUD THEY STAND TODAY!!! Look what they have achieved for themselves....FIRST GENERATION WEALTH...top second generation. From being unable to send their first sons to school so he could help look after the shop, to producing first class brains in all departments of modern learning.

So today, as you accuse Igbos of wanting their Biafra or of Baby Factory, or liking money and ready to do anything for money, remember that just forty years ago, while the banks were dashing your uncles loans to buy all the companies of Nigeria, it stole from the Igbos. Know that appointments have not favoured them. Note that they remain persecuted and many speak such ill and hate towards a people forced by need to survive to be extra-aggressive towards their sustenance. Maybe if you took their history into consideration, you will not be so critical of them, but instead say "what a resilient people" and give God the glory.

LETTER TO NIGERIAN YOUTHS

LETTER TO NIGERIAN YOUTHS!

Throw Away That Degree Otherwise You Will Die Poor Most of the educated people in Nigeria are poor. Majority of the educated earn less than N55,000 for a salary before tax and other deductions. When the deductions are put into consideration, the net salary comes to around N50,000. The net salary then suffers from loan deductions of up to N15,000 leaving the salary at around N35,000. The landlord then demands for his N15,000 and monthly shopping takes away N10,000 leaving one with a N10,000. The bus will demand for N300 going to and from work and relatives get another N2,500. The whole salary is gone and borrowed money starts operating. The borrowed money includes short loans and salary advances. The difference between poverty and prosperity is property. A prosperous person has property to his name while a poverty stricken person has no property to show. Using this understanding, therefore, most of the degree holders are poverty stricken, borrowing money to buy chicken and chips, pizza, and a car. The biggest excuse for getting paid such low amounts of money and having to sit and work for another person for 30 days is THE DEGREE that one possesses and that’s all. This has made most of the degree holders very poor to poverty stricken and will die that way most likely. A degree holder does not know how to generate money unless that money is generated for the employer. A degree holder is so dependent on the salary that he can do anything to get a job but will not think of starting a business of his own to employ others. Interesting Facts! 1. A degree holder is not prepared to sell chips but is very happy to work for hungry lion (companies). 2. A degree holder is not prepared to sell popcorn in the street but is very happy to work for Dangote outlet in the city and mum river-sides. 3. A degree holder is not prepared to sell second hand clothes but is very happy to be employed by Zenith Bank which the business of selling stocks and looking for customers in a scorching Sun. 4. A degree holder is not prepared to make N150,000 monthly doing his own business but is very happy to work at the till in a bank getting paid N25,000. 5. A degree holder is not prepared to start a company and grow it in two to three years but will spend three years searching for a job. 6. A degree holder is not prepared to sell food to students but will be happy to be reporting to a boss with no qualifications as Office Assistant as long as he is paid N30,000 for a salary. 7. A degree holder is so eager to get out of this country and work in another country than spend time to develop his own country. 8. A degree holder staying in a foreign land (Nigerian) is very keen to condemn Nigeria but never contributing to the development of this country. 9. A Nigerian degree holder would rather sweep the streets of London or USA than start a business to make money in her father land – others work in people’s homes doing some work (cleaners). 10. A degree holder in Nigeria will watch porn on his laptop but never sit to write a book using the same laptop to sell and make money. 11. A degree holder will blame the government for lack of jobs even after he was on government bursary for him to have his degree. 12. Nigeria is blessed with young people who have master’s degree and others are doctors in different technical fields such as IT and Engineering but all of them have failed to create a cartoon character or develop a movie from the same instead very happy to buy Tom and Jerry for their children thereby promoting American and UK. A school I visit, there is a man that is of very humble background. He does not speak English but sells Coke, Fanta and Sprite at N80 each making a profit of N10 on each drink. He also sells chips at N50 making a profit of N17 on each portion. Not less than 80 students buy chips and a drink every single day. This means he makes a profit of N27 for a drink and chips and a total profit of N2,160 per day…every single day. In ten days he makes a profit of N21,600 in twenty days N43,200 and in thirty days N64,800. The degree holder working in a bank at the till gets a salary of N45,000 every month. Why are the degree holders poor? Because they have decided to pride themselves in a degree and failed to think better than a man who does not have even a certificate to his name. Degree holders spend their time liking articles on linkedIn and facebook but never have any care in the world to implement what they like. Poverty starts from the mind, a mind that just likes things but never to implement those things. If you want to progress, keep that degree and start thinking better than someone without a degree. There's no white collar Job anywhere bro! Be prepared to get your hands dirty and work like an ox for your business. Your hard work will pay off. Yours Sincerely. .. Letter from a Concerned friend!

Parenting

*Parenting.*

A father’s influence goes to the fourth generation after him. Whitney Houston’s parents Emily and John Houston divorced when she was at kindergarten. Together with her hubby, Bobby Brown, Whitney smoked crack in the presence of their 5 year old daughter, Bobbi Kristina. At 22, Bobbi died of drug abuse…her mother Whitney died at 48 in similar circumstances. Great careers and more importantly, great lives lost due to weak fatherhood.

While there is little you can do about your ancestors, there is something that you can do about your descendants. One thing that prevents a man from being a good father is that he hasn’t completed being a boy. To be in your children’s’ memory tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today. Having children doesn’t make you a father. Raising them does.

There are many of us who were raised up in unstable families but we don’t have to pass it on to our children. We don’t have to fight in the presence of our children. We can choose to shield their emotions from our disputes as adults. To a large extent, you are a product of your early relationships

Unstable parents create insecure children. Stable parents raise stable children. Children need affection (hugs,), attention (listening) and affirmation (positive words), every day. When a man loves his wife, it creates security and stability. The best gift a father can give his children is to love their mother. Children learn how to handle feelings, losses, failure and conflicts at home.

Regrettably, parenting can neither be delegated nor suspended for a while as we work in the ring of fame and fortune. The growth of children is irreversible. Like a young tree, it takes the bends directed by the gardener, so is the life of a child. You can’t shape it in adulthood; you can’t pick it from where you left after you've  reached the top in your career pursuits. It’s always easier to model young boys than to rehabilitate grown up men.

If you invest in your child, you don’t have to invest for your child. Children require presence not presents. No amount of gifts and meeting financial obligations can replace your personal presence. Any written will can be torn in a few months after the demise of the writer of the will. The only sure inheritance that you can leave behind is the investment you make in your child not for your child.

Bless a family by sharing this as I have done now.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MAY 29THE IN NIGERIA’S DEVELOPMENT

*THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MAY 29TH IN NIGERIA’S HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT*

Issues surrounding May 29th as *"Nigeria Democracy Day”* as adopted in this Fourth Republic is a fraud.

*May 29th 1904* historically was when Othman Danfodio and his brother Abdullah Danfodio  primarily motivated by imperial desires, using Islamic religion as a tool to invade the Hausa (Habe) Kingdom. On that day Seriki Yunfa of Gobriyya (present Gusua,  Zamfara State) was beheaded by the Fulani invaders. Danfodio then started invading and stealing the Hausa land, and establishing green flags as a token of spiritual allegiance to Sokoto which he made his spiritual capital.

*May 29th 1952*. The colonial opportunist conducted a lopsided and rigged census for the amalgamated protectorates called Nigeria without the socio - cultural inputs of natives, for British economic purposes. Although by then the colonial masters had perfected an agreement with the Fulanis in collaboration with the subjected Hausas.

Demographically, that was the first census in the entire world that will apply demographic superiority to dwellers of Arid desert, as against tropical coastal line dwellers.

*May 29th, 1959*. The Northern region of Nigeria got approval for self rule from the conspiring British colonialists, two solid year the West and the East got theirs. The reason wss that the Fulanis had seen the spiritual power inherent in that date for their invading race.

*May 29th 1962*. State of emergency was declared in the western region  by the Fulani Tafawa Balewa regime with the British colonialist behind the scenes. It was during this period  that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was put under house arrest and was eventually jailed for felony. State of emergency declared in West was the position of the colonial masters to punish the region for pioneering the call and process towards Independence (i.e. Self Rule) from the
British government.

*May 29th 1967*. This was the day the second round of ethnic cleansing of the Igbo people of South eastern Nigeria took place as orchestrated throughout the North. Both young and old of the Igbo indigenes were eliminated and went further to all other southerners. This event majorly culminated in the call by LT. col Odumegwu  Ojukwu  on all Igbos to  return to their geographical space towards the Civil War.

*May 29th,1999* it was for the above reasons the Fulani Oligarchy imposed May 29th 1999 as the handover day on us through General. Abdulsalam Abubakar  the then head of state. And imposition of same day starting from year 2000 as Democracy day through their agent Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo.

*May 29th* has no meaning whatsoever to the real indigenes of Nigeria. It only has meaning to the Fulanis because it connotes their dominations, justifies their stronghold on other Nigerian Nationalities and signals our collective sense of enslavement by Fulanis.

*May 29th was not an election day nor any nationally mutual event day*. What happened to colonial handover of *October 1st 1960*, what happened to *October 1st 1963*, Republican and *October 1st 1979* second Republic handover date, and the usual *October 1st Independent celebration  day*?

And above all, *What's happened to 12th of June 1993 the day Nigeria chose to bury ethnicity and tribalism and returned to full blown democracy, which was aborted by Fulani oligarchy?*.

No wonder civil rights movement and self determination organizations including *Coalition for Yoruba Autonomy ( KOYA )* totally disagree with May 29th as our "Democracy Day’.

Shine your eyes well well.

WRONG PHILOSOPHIES

*WRONG PHILOSOPHIES*

1. *"WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE"*
```Whatever will be will not be; you have to make it be. You have a part to play in what will be in your life, either for the good to happen or the bad to be avoided. Don't leave it to chance.```
2. *"HALF BREAD IS BETTER THAN NONE!"*
```Why settle for half bread when you can get  a full bread or even own a bakery. This is a limiting belief that positions you to settle for less and it is a mediocre philosophy.```

3. *"A FOOL AT FORTY IS A FOOL FOREVER"*
```A fool at any age can be a fool forever if he refuses to let go of his foolishness. It is never too late to become wise because the day you wake up and wise up is the day you CHANGE for the better!```
4. *"ALL FINGERS ARE NOT EQUAL"*
```Yes! Physical fingers in your hands are not equal but that does not make any of them valueless. Each serves a purpose. Lose one and you realise that they are all valuable. You are not even a finger, so why look down on yourself.```

5. *"LIFE BEGINS AT FORTY"*
```If you are below forty and believe this, I feel so sorry for you because it means you are not yet alive.```
6. *"WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN"*
```Is your age coming down? Is your wisdom and knowledge coming down? Is the price of goods coming down? Think my friend!```

7. *"HE WHO LAUGHS LAST, LAUGHS BEST!"*
```Why laugh last when you can laugh always and why laugh best when laughter is not a competition. When we programmed ourselves with these strange philosophies, they limit and restrict us.```
You will change your world.
You have the opportunity to RECREATE YOUR WORLD.
EVIDENCES and SIMILARITIES ------------------------- Now to verify some of the things I have said above. (1) If you get to Aguleri there is a particular House known as OBI GAD (HOUSE OF GAD). Remember GAD was the 7th son of Jacob Gen 29:30 and GAD begets 5 Sons of which the last 3 (ERI, ARODI, AND ARELI AND A HALF BROTHER LEFT EGYPT TO WEST AFRICA. ) ... The OBI GAD was the resting or relaxing place for ERI and his brothers and they named it OBI GAD in order to honour there father (GAD d 7 th child of Jacob) . This OBI GAD was /is the first house built in IGBO LAND. this is the reason why every IGBO MAN always build a place called OBI/OBU in his house in honour of his father and mainly for relaxation and in the olden Days, there is Always a family shrine or little Oracle, and why they worship ORACLE then was because they left EGYPT before GOD gave TEN COMMADMENT MOSES , WHICH ONE OF IT IS AGAINST WORSHIPING OF IDOL. ( even though modern day IGBOS now build OBI as outside BAR without the Shrine , while, some Christians don't build OBI anymore because of their Beliefs) . It can also be Called ERI TEMPLE. The Obi GAD also serve as a Consulting place for some royal fathers from other community that have Direct root to ERI. ANOTHER EVIDENCE . (2) At the Burial place of ERI, there is a TRINITY TREE standing on the grave site. These are three Trees but are strongly United and connected by Single Tap Root. (3) ADA; means first Daughter in Israel (Gen 4 vs 19- 20) and it means the same thing in Igbo language. (4) Before an Igbo man makes a contribution in a public gathering, he will shout "Igbo Kwenu " and the people will respond "Yah" and "Yah" is short form of " Yahweh ". Yahweh " ; is the name of Jewish GOD. (5) STAR OF DAVID AND some bronze medals Encrypted with Hebrew Codes were found in many part of the igbo land. (6) Israel manufactures 80% the world weapons and 70 % of USA weapons. Just like igbos manufactured 80 % of all the weapons used during Biafran. Which no other African Nation has done. Igbos were only defeated during the war due to Hunger policy. By now, we would have manufacturing War weapons for Africans, and no country will have to go outside Africa to purchase weapons to fight Insurgency, if not for the bad policy of Nigeria. Igbos are the most highly technologically inclined in the whole of Africa. You will also notice that Igbos always handle the post of science and technology and industry in most Nigeria ministerial post, The first west African billionaire is from Nnewi Chief Sir Louis Ojukwu, the black Indigenous Vehicle Manufacturers E.g INNOSON MOTORS AND COSHARIS MOTORS, Indigenous MOBILE PHONE AND COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS e.g A) SLOK MOBILE (Orji Uzo kalu).. B) ZINOX COMPUTERS(Leo Stan Ekeh) . C) SLOT MOBILE (NNAMDI EZEIGBO) D) Father of Internet and founder of The Fastest Computer in the world(PHILIP EMEAGWALI) ...... ETC, etc, etc. (7) We carry home our dead one just like the Israel (Gen 49 vs 29-50). ( Just like the Israel we were led or ruled by Elders and Priest. There was no King in Israel until appointed SAUL as the king of the Israel and that was why Israelites were led by prophet moses and so many other prophets. Etc Conclusion ------------------------ Isreali Ambassador (Noah Katz) Confirmed that Igbos are jews. (Check Daily Sun Newspapers 28 March 2004). Therefore, Igbo Are the Engine Block and Japan of Africa , no wonder an Author with international Reputation, "Emefiena Ezennia" said that in "Biafra Africa Died". We are good people, we love our neighbours, we accommodate any body. We can live everywhere and develop any where. It in our blood to develop. We need Igbos to develop Nigeria and Africa, even all over the world, we are Gods people a chosen generation!
Nigeria should stop the marginalization of the Igbos and the Biafra or let them have their freedom.
For the Igbo's we should know who we are dream and think bigger, for you are the son of the most high God, the God of Abraham (Abiama) believe in your self and work harder as it is in your blood, every parents should jh endeavor to teach their children igbo language and culture all the time!
BEAUTIFUL LETTER WRITTEN BY A FATHER TO HIS SON AND DAUGHTER
_*Beautiful letter written by a father to his son and daughter*_
*Make sure  your children read it too.*
Following is a letter to his daughter from a renowned Hong Kong TV Broadcaster and Child Psychologist.
The words are actually applicable to all of us, young or old, children or parents.!
This applies to all sons & daughters too.
All parents can use this in their teachings to their children.
_Dear Children,_
_I am writing this to you because of 3 reasons..._
_1. Life, fortune and mishaps are unpredictable, nobody knows how long he lives._
_2. I am your father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will._
_3. Whatever written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save you a lot of unnecessary heartaches._
_*Remember the following as you go through life.*_
_1. Do not bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I._
_To those who are good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and ALSO you have to be cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move. When a person is good to you, it does not mean he really will be good to you. You have to be careful, don't hastily regard him as a real friend._
_2. No one is indispensable, nothing is in the world that you must possess._
_Once you understand this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people around you don't want you anymore, or when you lose what you wanted the most._
_3. Life is short._
_When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that life is leaving you. The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy life._
_4. Love is nothing but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and with one's mood. If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will wash away your aches and sadness._
_Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness of love, and don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love._
_5. A lot of successful people did not receive a good education, that does not mean that you can be successful by not studying hard! Whatever knowledge you gain is your weapon in life._
_One can go from rags to riches, but one has to start from some rags !_
_6. I do not expect you to financially support me when I am old, neither  would I financially support your whole life. My responsibility as a supporter ends when you are grown up. After that, you decide whether  you want to travel in a public transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor._
_7. You honour your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to people, but don't expect people to be good to you. If you don't understand this, you would end up with unnecessary troubles._
_8. I have bought lotteries for umpteen years , but could never strike any prize. That shows if you want to be rich, you have to work hard! There is no free lunch !_
_9. No matter how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have together. We do not know if we would meet again in our next life._
                 _Your Parents_
                         _X Y Z_
*Read it twice
*Ask your son and daughter to read it thrice
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ABEOKUTA
INTERESTING FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ABEOKUTA
Abeokuta was a sovereign nation for 20 years and 11 months before the British almagamated her with the rest of Nigeria. She had her own laws, Police Force, Civil Service and was well organized. The Alake was the head of the defunct government known as the Egba United Government (1 February 1893- 1 January 1914). The almagamation with the rest of Nigeria did not go down well with the Egba people and this resulted in the Adubi War (1918). I have compiled some facts about this ancient and paramount city that seats as the capital of Ogun State and also the pride of Egbaland.
Abeokuta was founded in 1830, with Sodeke as her leader. The initial name of Abeokuta was “Oko Adagba” meaning “Adagba’s farmstead”-Adagba was an Itoko farmer. Sodeke who led the Egbas met him there.
Abeokuta means ‘under a rock’, signifying the protection which the Olumo Rock offered the Egbas during attacks.
Since the discovery of Olumo Rock, no one has fallen from it. Not even once.
The first church in Nigeria, St. Peter’s Anglican Church, is in Abeokuta.
The first Baptist Church in West Africa and the first local government in Nigeria (Abeokuta South) are in Abeokuta.
The first University in Nigeria should have been located in Abeokuta but due to infighting, it was established at Ibadan as the University of Ibadan in 1948.
The first secondary school in Nigeria was sited in Abeokuta before it was relocated to Lagos as CMS Grammar School due to unknown reasons.
The first hospital in Nigeria, Sacred Heart Hospital, is in Abeokuta. It is still functioning.
The first bridge in Nigeria (Sokori Bridge-1903) built by a Nigerian (Mr. John Adenekan) without European supervision is in Abeokuta.
The first Newspaper in Nigeria (Iwe Iroyin) was founded in Abeokuta in 1859.
The first president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and the first woman to drive a car was from Abeokuta. They both married each other. They were also the first male and female admitted to Abeokuta Grammar School.
The first indigenous Chief Justice of Nigeria (Justice Adetokunbo Ademola) was from Abeokuta. He was the son of the longest reigning monarch (Alake) in Egbaland.
Okukenu Sagbua I, was the first Alake of Egbaland. He was enthroned on August 8, 1854. His descendant, Okukenu Sagbua IV is the current Alake of Egbaland.
Alake Gbadebo I, was the first monarch in Nigeyou
to visit England on a state visit. He spent 20 days at sea-May 5-25, 1904.
The first time a white man came to Abeokuta on January 4, 1843, everybody (both young and old) left their homes and market places to catch a glimpse of Henry Townsend, the white man.
During the American Civil War (1861-1865) which interrupted the U.S cotton trade to Europe, Abeokuta exported cotton to England.
The most influential woman in the history of Egbaland and the first Iyalode of Egbaland was Madam Tinubu. Tinubu square in Lagos and Ita Iyalode in Abeokuta are named after her. She died in 1887.
In 1893, the Egba United Government was recognized as an independent nation by Britain. She had her own laws. Many developments were made until 1914, when she was amalgamated to form Nigeria. The Sokori Bridge was constructed in 1903 and Abeokuta Grammar School was founded on July 16, 1908.
Abeokuta has produced many outstanding persons in the nation: In Academics (Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, Professor Saburi Biobaku), In Accountancy (Akintola Williams, Folorunso Oke, Bola Kuforiji-Olubi), In Law (Justice Adetokunbo Ademola – first indigenous Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olumuyiwa Jibowu, George Sodehinde Sowemimo, S. O. Lambo, Chief F.R.A. Williams, Prince Bola Ajibola), In Medicine (Moses Majekodunmi, Professor Thomas Lambo, Koye Ransome – Kuti)), In Military (Olusegun Obasanjo, Oluwole Rotimi, Enitan Ransome-Kuti), In Civil Service (Simeon Adebo), In Literature (Ajisafe, J.F Odunjo, Amos Tutuola, Wole Soyinka – of Egba mother), In Music (Josiah J. Ransome-Kuti, Fela Ransome-Kuti, Femi Ransome-Kuti, Fela Sowande, Ebenezer Obey, Sina Peters, Adeola Akinsanya, Prince Adekunle, Ayinla Omowura), In Journalism (Olusegun Osoba, Reuben Abati), In Women Rights and Entrepreneur (Iyalode Tinubu, Eniola Soyinka, Elizabeth Adekogbe, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Iyalode Bisi Tejuoso), In Politics (Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Adegunle Sonekan, M.K.O. Abiola, Moses Majekodunmi, Dimeji Bankole, Ayotunde Rosiji, Olusegun Osoba, Ibikunle Amosun) and others countless to mention.
In 1925, Josiah Jesse Ransome-Kuti (1855-1930) Fela’s grandfather, became the first Nigerian to release a record album after he recorded several Yoruba language hymns in gramophone through Zonophone Records.
The most enlightened clan among the Yoruba tribe are the Egbas. Her chiefs had been interacting with the Queen of England as far back as 1868 which continued till a century later. English and Egba monarchs did exchange gifts.
The only South Westerners ever to rule Nigeria are from Abeokuta (Olusegun Obasanjo and Ernest Shonekan).
It is widely believed that Egba women are more independent than any other Yoruba tribe in the country e.g Eniola Soyinka, Elizabeth Adekogbe and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
Popular Egba Song:
Egba ile, ibe ni 'gbagbo ti bere;
Egba ile, ibe l'olaju ti bere;
Omo Egba won m'aye je.;
Baba mi se die loro mi emi l'omo Lakesin.
Bo ni male ma wi ni mosalasi, won a ni ka ma ro'ko;
Bo ni 'gbagbo ma wi ni Soosi, won a ni ka ma s'agbe.
Eni yo s'ore agbe, a jinyan koko, a senu kabata;
Ewele wekun ewele,
A ko ma f'oju sunkun ara wa;
E e wele wekun e wele.
Awa omo Olumo, awa Egba a ho yaya, awa omo Olumo (2ce).
WASTEFULNESS AND POVERTY
Is poverty a curse that makes men mad?
Here’s a true story, as told me by a second hand witness. Two Nigerians ordered oversized plates of food they didn’t need from an expensive restaurant somewhere in Germany. The waiters thought these were unusual amounts of food but what the heck, if they were this hungry. Surprises awaited them.
Moments later, maybe to impress the white man, the men took just a few nibbles from their plates, shoved the food away and motioned the waiter for their bill.
“You have to finish the food, Sirs,” the bewildered waiter politely told them.
“No, we’re okay, no problem,” they answered, laughing.
“But you have to eat the food, you cannot throw this amount of food away” insisted the restaurateur.
The two men looked each other in the face, muttering, in Warri accent, “Shooooow?”
“Look” they said with rising temper, “the money is ours, not yours! We’re paying you for the food! What’s your problem?”
“We understand, Sirs,” said the restaurateur calmly, “But when you throw this food away, it is a spite on our people and our economy.
“You see, someone grew the tomatoes and vegetables, someone raised the cow and the fish, someone manufactured the oils and the other dozen ingredients, someone transported the ingredients to the grocery, someone cut the veggies, prepared the meal, served them, someone went to school to learn the best cooking there is, someone taught them, interviewed, employed them.
“You see, Sirs … it took the labor of love, knowledge and skills of thousands of our German people to serve you those two plates of food. It’s not about your money, it’s about the thousands of people who made it possible. It is a sin against our economy.”
••• While all this was going, one of the waiters had already called the police. Story short, they were forced to go with the take-away pack of the food they wanted thrown into the dustbin.
Listen, friends! To load up your plate from a buffet, and leave half of it uneaten is not a sign of big-manism. It’s a clinical symptom of poverty. Of mental illness.
••• What does poverty have to do with wastefulness? Everything! Some people are poor mostly because they are wasteful! The poor waste time, waste ideas, waste opportunities, waste talent, waste relationships, waste money!
••• Again, I read a story from my social feed the other day. One post-NYSC girl went to this other girl to beg for N50,000 to start a business. Meanwhile, she had N75,000 made up hair on her head! Of course the wiser one asked her, girl-to-girl, “Sister, your hair is N75k, how come you didn’t use the money to start your business?”
We do the same thing as a country. Senator Ben Bruce narrated how our government used N250,000,000.00 ($500,000) to build a gatehouse . I have been to the high and low places in America and the UK. There’s no place you’ll see a gatehouse built with $500,000. And yet, we want those countries to give us a loan - to build more gatehouses? Is poverty a curse?
••• That's why Nelson Mandela said, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.” We can never cure poverty by giving the poor handouts, and giving graduates N5,000 a month. We must pull down the demonic “Nigerian system” that makes this place “a land that swallows its inhabitants.”
Wastefulness is immoral. God abhors the wasteful. We are stewards of God’s resources. He did not appoint us to waste His resources.
If you are wasteful, you are immoral. God abhors immorality.
Think about it for a moment. According to the United Nations, four people die of hunger every second! Aren’t you immoral when you leave uneaten food on your plate to be thrown away?
••• One in nine Indians, mostly children, will go to bed hungry today. India is 1.3 billion people - do the math. In our own back yard, according to the 2015 World Hunger Report, nearly 13 million Nigerians will go to bed hungry tonight. Today, if you count 10 people on the street, 2 or 3 likely haven’t had breakfast.
So, aren’t you immoral when your kitchen sink is half-filled with wasted breakfast cereals, milk, pap and fried eggs you and your obese children didn’t finish up? What you flush down your drains everyday could literally save dozens of lives from death by starvation.
••• In my house, you can eat as much as you want but don’t leave anything on the plate. My children learnt early that they’d better not throw food away. I recall the day I insisted that one of them eat the food he had thrown away from the dustbin!
••• The God of the Universe does not want. Yet, He does not waste! He owns everything, but He wastes nothing. After He fed the 5,000, He instructed that the leftovers be picked up and accounted for. Not just for camp sanitation. I believe He gave the poor takeaway packs. Wow! He says that not one bird falls from the sky without His notice! Nor wanting, nor wasting!
••• I know a few billionaires and many millionaires, in dollars. I’m not talking about our political thieves; I mean real entrepreneurs. There are quite a few shocking truths about people who have created wealth through sheer entrepreneurial genius, persistence and hard work. One is their spiritual sensitivity. I have consulted for a billionaire who would not leave his house until he has prayed and praised God for at least 4 - 5 hours daily. Yes, daily!
The most shocking truth about these billionaires, perhaps, is their thriftiness. They never want but they don't waste. They will not give you one cent if you do not convince them about the value you will create from it. Everything must be accounted for. They keep receipts. They weigh their financial decisions  meticulously.
••• Are you wasteful? For instance, do you have clothes in your wardrobe that you have not worn in 12 months? I heard a woman talk about clothes she has not worn in 3 - 4 years!
Or you’re a single guy, just graduated and got a job in the city. What did you rent a 3-bedroom flat for? Three bedrooms? And what are you doing inside a gas-guzzling SUV? Are you certain you can afford it now?
Do you leave the lights in your room on even when no one is there? That NEPA slams their crazy "estimated bill" on you is not an excuse for waste.
Foolish girl! You earn 50k a month but you have an 80k phone and  you just ordered an aso-ebi of N100k! Why won't you deserve poverty?
You keep looking for more money. Is it possible that the Shepherd of Psalm 23 has already provided but your wastefulness blinds you?
Do you know how much cash flow you can free up in your life if you adjusted your lifestyle of wastefulness? No man ever escaped poverty who didn’t learn the wisdom of thrift.
••• Do you ask God for long life? Good. How do you use your 24 daily hours? Can you account for the past 365 days? If you haven’t used 24 hours productively, why should He give you 24 years?
May God open our eyes to see the damage that our wastefulness inflicts on our destinies…
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A father left 17 Camels as an Asset for his Three Sons.
When the Father passed away, his sons opened up the will.
The Will of the Father stated that the Eldest son should get Half of 17 Camels,
The Middle Son should be given 1/3rd of 17 Camels,
Youngest Son should be given 1/9th of the 17 Camels,
As it is not possible to divide 17 into half or 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the sons started to fight with each other.
So, they decided to go to a wise man.
The wise man listened patiently about the Will. The wise man, after giving this thought, brought one camel of his own & added the same to 17. That increased the total to 18 camels.
Now, he started reading the deceased father’s will.
Half of 18 = 9.
So he gave 9 camels
to the eldest son.
1/3rd of 18 = 6.
So he gave 6 camels
to the middle son.
1/9th of 18 = 2.
So he gave 2 camels
to the youngest son.
Now add this up:
9 + 6 + 2 = 17 &
This leaves 1 camel,
which the wise man took back.
MORAL: The attitude of negotiation & problem solving is to find the 18th camel i.e. the common ground. Once a person is able to find the common ground, the issue is resolved. It is difficult at times.
However, to reach a solution, the first step is to believe that there is a solution. If we think that there is no solution, we won’t be able to reach any!
If you liked this story,  please share with all. You might spark a thought, inspire & possibly change a life forever!u
A very interesting management lesson.
